Nourishing Networks
The Public Culture of Food in New Orleans
What can the people who fed a city tell us about its history? In Nourishing Networks, Ashley Rose Young follows the vendors, market workers, and customers who shaped New Orleans through the everyday work of buying and selling food.
Published by Oxford University Press in 2025.
About the book
For generations, New Orleanians began their days to the calls of street vendors and the sounds of municipal markets. Black and white, enslaved and free, women and men, wealthy and working class, they met in public spaces to feed their families and earn a living.
Nourishing Networks tells the story of those encounters. Young shows how food sellers and their customers negotiated prices, tastes, rules, and access to public space—and how race, gender, and class shaped whose work was welcomed, restricted, or overlooked. Their daily choices influenced the city’s economy and culture, while raising questions that still matter: who gets to feed a community, and on what terms?
Rich in human stories, the book offers a new way to see New Orleans and the people whose labor made its celebrated food culture possible.
